Noob here, I have searched this forum but can’t find anything on this.

I have an XC40 Twin Recharge Plus 2021, software updated to 3.2.8 2 days ago.

Prior to the software update I have been getting the “external sound system malfunction” error and the external sound had stopped. I was hoping the software update might fix it but it hasn’t. I have tried multiple infotainment reboots, no change.

Dealer thinks the speaker may have failed. Does anyone have details of the location of speaker, I’m wondering if a DIY replacement could be viable.

Sorry, what is the “external sound”?

It’s mandatory for EVs and HEVs to emit an artificial sound up to 20 mph to ensure they can be heard by pedestrians and cyclists. This is the external sound the OP is referring to.

For a safety conscious car maker the volume is woeful. Barely audible driving forward, and the reversing beep isn’t much better. Neighbour has a Kia hybrid and the reverse beeper must be 10 times the volume of the Volvo.

I had a similar issue with my XC40 where the external sound system stopped working, and after a software update, it still didn’t come back. From what I know, the speaker is located near the front bumper, behind the grille. If you're comfortable with DIY work, you could check for loose connections or damaged wires, but keep in mind that replacing it yourself might void any warranty if you're still covered. When I looked into it, I found that other XC40 owners have managed to replace it with some basic tools, so it might be worth checking out some Volvo-specific forums for step-by-step guides if you decide to go that route.
