Well after 10 months of ownership, and a considerable financial loss (I’m lucky I can afford it) I’ve traded in my XC40 for the car I should have bought p, an Audi Q3. I’ve had a persistent cold misfire, and persistent misfire if I lift at speed then re=accelerate, to the extent I get bloody stupid tortoise symbols. Volvo can fix it as “computer says nothing wrong”. Utter shite. Added to odd braking noises, sluggish acceleration and shoddy gearchanges fron low speed, grossly over-intrusive driver “aids” I’d had enough. It’s a barge with crap software (except mine hasn’t updated sine 3.0.3 and claims to be “up to date”). I’m happy for those who enjoy the car, but I didn’t. Plus I’ve now got a Navarro Blue Q3, my favourite car colour, instead of a battleship grey one. Adios.

I hope you enjoy your Audi, I'll probably buy a BMW next. Can you let us know which dealership couldn't fix your XC40 so we know not to use them please.

It's a pity, as when everything is working right it's a very nice car and as you know I've been very critical of a number of aspects. But with the misfires and poor acceleration (mine goes well) I can fully understand your decision. It's woeful that Volvo haven't been able to remedy the problems and a poor show that they think it acceptable for a customer to have to put up with a defective car. And unfortunately some other poor soul will inherit the problems as I doubt it will be fixed.

Interesting that some folks have come from Audi and prefer the XC40. I'm an Audi man and have had a few over the years. I looked at the Q3 but found it a bit tight for space in the back with me being 6'1" which isn't that tall. Liked the Q5 but a well specced one starts to get very expensive. I shall have another look when I come to change though.

That blue sounds nice. Let us know how you find your new car.

Shame you have had such a bad experience with the XC40, and get why you want to see the back of it. Q3 is a good car, but with the new model coming next year, residuals will plummet on current one, which happened to me when I had a Q5 and there was a model change. That said, if a lease, not an issue for you. Enjoy.

That's been the good thing with the XC40, with it only having minor visual changes residuals have remained good whatever the year.

It only seems that the Q3 was updated recently as I was checking one out when having the TT serviced but it must have been some years ago now.

I've mentioned before on here, I've actually got a v60 B3 but the engine and box are identical to the one in the xc40 and all the misfiring Volvos according to my dealer have that box and the B3 or B4 engine.

Mine would misfire daily if I pushed it when cold.

Four sets of plugs, one injector and then a full set of injectors and another set of plugs eventually cleared it only for it to return 2 months and 5000 miles on.

Volvo assist stated this problem was a mystery as it only started late 2021 yet the engine is largely unchanged excepting the belt start hybrid from the earlier engines.

What happened in 21? E10 petrol.

Switched to super unleaded and over a few weeks and 4 tanks the issue went - it hasn't come back 10000 miles on.

Theory is that the ethanol mixed with the engine off coasting happening dozens of times an hour is drying to a gum on the end of the injector just sufficient to cause injection issues when the engine needs that bit more fuel when cold.

Not really acceptable for a 2023 car but saves my alternative of trading it in for an A4 for now.

Fortunately I've been using BP Ultimate and Shell V-Power in all my vehicles for years.

Then I should be grateful my '21 B4 doesn't shut the engine off on coasting, as I use standard petrol and in 30 k plus miles not had this issue.

I won’t comment on not liking the Volvo XC40 after all (at the time it happened to my wife as well), and I certainly won’t comment on going to Audi (not only did my wife then return to Audi, but I am an Audi driver myself since decades : A4, A6, A8, now on my third Q7).

I simply don’t understand how people can complain about a car colour they no doubt chose themselves. I mean, if you’ve chosen a battleship grey, you won’t have your favourite kind of blue, of course. That’s not Volvo’s fault.

Anyway, all is well now : you’ve got what you like and in the right colour as well. I wish you the best of luck, and I sincerely think you’ll be happy with your Q3.

By the way, (car) colours are a matter of personal taste. I wouldn’t want to be seen in a blue car, but that’s just me. I’m probably old school, but I keep it simple since my youth. All my cars have been and are black, white, or some kind of grey with only one exception : a very long time ago I had a standard green Land Rover 109 with a white roof as a fun car.

I tend to use Tesco Momentum, it’s E5 98RON and at a reasonable price.

I’ve not experienced the misfire issue either, but I’m only 7,000 miles in to my ownership from new.

I know E10 was common in Europe before it became the standard here, but personally I just feel that my cars run better on the “premium fuel”, but that is individual choice.
