Tailgate struts for xc40 2019
Took my car in for a service today and told them the tailgate struts were getting noisy, and I knew this was a known fault. On picking up they agreed the struts were faulty and said Volvo had offered 80% contribution but they were confident they could get them to cover the whole cost. I am waiting to hear from them about the conclusion and fix a date for replacement. At no point was there any question of a diagnostic cost. My car has some kind of partial fourth year warranty from Volvo which I will dig out if they don't agree to free replacement, but the dealer didn't seem to think there would be an issue. Fourth year service was £450 inc, negotiated down from £500 so nothing in there for the diagnostic!

Had both struts on my 2021 replaced last week while the car was in for service and MOT. I booked the service online, and mentioned the noisy struts and front top mounts in the comments section.
Struts were in stock, top mounts now on order.
All done under the Selekt 2 year warranty/service package that came "free" with the car because I took £5k on finance (paid off after 6 months).
No quibbling at all from the dealer.

Sytner in Warrington. They have since confirmed that Volvo will pay 100%, and are collecting the car to replace the struts in a fortnight.
Don't know why people sometimes seem to be reluctant to name dealers here, it seems valuable info to me, whether positive or negative, as long as you remember that there will be inconsistencies as I suspect there is a large element of of the individual you deal with as well as the company policy.

Well I’ve e mailed Snows at Southampton about my struts and they can’t even be bothered to reply. Not surprised really as the last service I had there was an awful experience

On reflection, two things worth saying. I am fairly sure that I wouldn't have bothered mentioning a squeak from the struts if I hadn't read about the problem here, so that makes this forum worth several hundred pounds to me, I have a feeling that establishing from the start that I knew it was a design issue probably helped the argument for a 100% contribution so double whammy from the forum!

Hello, guess what? My passenger-side tailgate strut is creaking like the Mary Celeste. Its a 2020 and i thought i'd got away with it. I've read the great posts about water-proofing them and oiling them. Are the units serviceable? When the water gets in does it leak out somewhere or just stay there, anyone know?
I had a drivers side strut that groaned, and I tried wd 40 and GT85, no better, but another poster said he used engine oil on his struts, so I tried doing that for a few days, and now that strut sounds like it did when I got the car, over 3 yrs ago, so I would try that, you have nothing to lose. it has been quiet for over 3 weeks now, so fingers crossed!
