With a completely new car out of the blocks might be interesting to see whether the predicted decline of diesel's holds true in this new "anti-diesel" world. [Transmission alternatives included as sure that will be of interest to some. ]
Notes: Specification options based on those available in the MY18 and 19 Edition 4 pricelist. The poll has been set up so that you can change your voting at a later date if needed.

Poll: Which engine/transmission are you looking at, or have purchased?
The D4. What Car's Car of the Year, unlike the T5.
Two XC40s - so far! Inscription Pro T5 AWD Auto - Glacier Silver/Blond/21”, fully loaded, from Jan thro Sep 2021. Polestarred. Also one of the first FEs - a D4 AWD Auto - Bursting Blue/Charcoal/20" from Mar thro Aug 2018. Also Polestarred.
Did wonder how much of that decision was a "political statement" by What Car? given some of the comments made afterwards. But either way it does look to be a good car - can't argue with that - and does fly in the face that modern diesels are high polluters (relative).
As an aside does any one know how What Car? selects which cars to put into the Car of the Year selection? Do they consider each and every spec, engine etc, on the market or is it one of these awards that where car makers put forward specific cars to be considered in each category, and then What Car? are then given the cars to try out. So there is effectively self selection/exclusion going on before they even get started with judging?

Would appear petrol is taking the lead here which I'm actually kind of surprised at! I'm going T5 almost purely for the refinement over the diesel, that and it will be used for predominantly short journeys!

I love diesels and have had nothing else for 15 years, but I feel that buying a new one now would be a big mistake. Many cities and large towns will have costly (daily) penalties in place for diesels within three years. I have. T5 FE on order and am selling a diesel.......it’s a Euro 6 compliant Audi and even that has depreciated massively over the past year. I suspect that in three years time nobody will want a diesel. Just wish they put a bigger fuel tank in the T5 to give better range.
Good points being made on diesel depreciation and potential value after 3 years, but I am buying on a PCP and the quoted residual/GFV is actually quite high. In 3 years time if the contract is under water I will hand it back and move on - probably to an electric or hybrid (?).

I ordered the d3 diesel after looking at rivals with petrols. I was impressed with the 1.5tsi in the Skoda Karoq which we test drove. I had discounted having a diesel in our next car but after seeing the xc40 my mind was made up. Looked at the T3 but with a combined mpg of 42mpg (early 30s real world) Vs 58mpg for the d3 probably late 40s in real driving situations I decided to reluctantly go for diesel. I decided to get it on a lease so I can hand it back and next time go for the hybrid version. What are other peoples thoughts?
Pitching in (as no one else has yet): Assuming you are not bothered about performance (mph/acceleration etc - and here I don't think we have those details yet for the T3 or D3) and that you have no preference for diesel over petrol then isn't this a number crunching exericse? What's the total cost to you of either spec over the same period? If you are focused on mpg I presume cost is the key metric for you?Alfa_forza wrote: ↑Thu Feb 15, 2018 11:40 pm I ordered the d3 diesel after looking at rivals with petrols. If the diesel comes out on top with the numbers then short term ownership and review in 2 to 3 years sounds like it will get you through the period and before most of the much touted changes ( tolls on diesel in cities etc) kick in and when hybrids and electrics possibly (!) a bit more embedded.
[Of course I've gone petrol but my view of car ownership is a longer one and by the time this one cycles out the world will be a different place]
