Loud rattle at start up (intermittent)
I've booked mine into the garage to get it looked at - will report back in a couple of weeks what they find (if anything). I did video the car starting up on a very cold morning, and it obligingly made the noise, so can try and work out how to post here if anyone's interested. Also, I looked under the bonnet to see if there was anything obvious, and I did notice that all the bolts holding the heat shield to the rear of the engine bay were all quite loose - I tightened them up just by hand, and it's not made the noise since, but then again it's not been nearly as cold - and I'm not sure the banging noise it was making could be down to this rattling around...

Something very wrong with the heat shield bolts if you could tighten them further by hand?

Yes, exactly my thought - they'd obviously not been torqued up either at manufacture or during the recent service - but I'm not sure why they'd have needed to remove this part, and the noise has happened before the service. I'll get the garage to check when it goes in shortly.
An update on the issue where my MY24 B3 XC40 was making a loud clanking noise when starting around freezing outside after a few days of no use. This was diagnosed as due to a faulty mild hybrid auxiliary belt tensioner, which has now been replaced (along with the belt). Hopefully this will mean no shredding belt in the near future...

That's good you got it sorted before it failed completely. The video shows the sound very well.
When my belt failed there was no warning at all.

I've been told by a Volvo Recovery Technician that it was an issue with the Serpentine Belt rather than the tensioner causing the reported failures. The belt has subsequently been redesigned. He had never seen a failed tensioner but many failed belts, although not so many this last year. Of course that doesn't mean a tensioner cannot fail. He carries a Serpentine belt kit with him and can replace at the roadside.
Looking at mine, there appears to be a V belt that drives the water pump as well although it could be the serpentine belt, hard to tell from the video.
