Just to jump in with a few comments here;
If the gearbox in the T3 is torque converter type (which I think it is) the gearbox will NOT change into N at a complete stop. The speed of the impeller at engine idle is so low that the trans fluid transfers almost no energy to the turbine and therefore very little power to the wheels. Holding the brake is enough to overcome the power being transferred to the driven wheels. So in short the trans does NOT change to N.
However DCT's ( as far as I know found only on the T5 Twin Engine XC40 which has a 7spd DCT) do disengage the clutch(es) when fully stopped, but this is not truly the same as shifting into N in a traditional sense.
Hope this clears it up.
XC40 T3 Auto Tremble
See post from morganj for explanation. Most auto boxes will stay in D, rather than change to N.
Thanks for pointing this out in detailmorganj wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2020 12:12 pm Just to jump in with a few comments here;

I wasn't aware of differences between the T3 and T5 Twin, i have a T4 myself but that's all good to know!
The description of gearbox types is valid for all vehicles with the respective type.ciuncky wrote: ↑Fri Jan 31, 2020 9:49 amThanks for pointing this out in detailmorganj wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2020 12:12 pm Just to jump in with a few comments here;

I only know the details of the T5 Twin so well as I am eagerly awaiting the delivery of mine, (May / June)
I believe that all other XC40 Autos use the same 8spd torque converter box.

I am on my 2nd XC40 T3 Auto and they both have the same thing. Stop at traffic lights with your foot on the brake and after a second or so you feel the drive disconnecting and the engine smooths out. Feels like you are putting it in neutral.
Have a search on the Internet. It is called the 'Neutral Stop' or Neutral Control', where the gearbox disengages drive without shifting out of D. When I was last in the dealer I asked the service guy about it and he said "yes, it does something like that".

If you read every post in this thread, you will see that it’s not really an issue : it’s normal. So if it’s not an issue, no solution is needed.
However, if it feels to you as if something is really wrong with your Aisin 8-speed automatic gearbox, you best take your car to the Volvo dealer to sort things out.
