When I first got the car the stop/start feature implemented itself at every single traffic light but now after only a few weeks of ownership it never kicks in.
I've seen this before with my VW and before that my Audi. When brand new the stop/start would kick in all the time but not so long into ownership it never reared its head unless the car had been serviced at the dealer and the stop/start would then work for a few days afterwards. What gives?
Stop/start
Cold weather can affect both the 12V and 48V batteries, increasing the need for them to be charged more frequently by the engine. The engine takes longer to reach optimal temperature, while the use of electrical seat and steering wheel heating will often disable start/stop. My missus hybrid car used to make the short trip from home to the office entirely on electric power in the summer, but with temperatures below 10C last week, for the same route the engine stays on the whole way.
And to add to above excellent answer, how long is your journey, if you’re only doing short journeys, then it’s not going to potentially get to the ideal operating temp / settings where it will work.
I remember speaking to a tech guy at BMW few years back and he said there was an outside temperature setting that the car used, if it was below this, then stop/start was disabled by the car…

Good answers. I was sure that it must have something to do with my driving style and journey types but I never have the electric seats & steering wheel on, never have the radio on and am not doing 5 minute drives.
I've always found it strange that previous cars would employ the stop/start feature after routine yearly services and then stop again a few days afterwards. Do dealers charge the batteries right up or something? When I first got the Volvo 3 or 4 weeks ago it did the stop/start thing literally every time I came to a stop but hasn't done it once in days now.

I also found if you hold the brake pedal a fraction longer after the car stops, the engine will stop. Getting too used to brake hold and lifting off the pedal too quickly it will override the stopping.
The stop start is driven by the 48v battery unlike your previous cars and is very reliable, and over 3 years on still working every time.

I wouldn't be complaining! I'm happy when it doesn't activate!
I haven't noticed much change in behaviour over more than 12 months, even recently when the weather has gotten colder, it still activates often, even on short trips. Apart from of course, when as stated, a number of things are on.
Does the coasting function cut in regularly?

I've had this problem for years now (see earlier posts). The stop/start only kicks in when I've done about 100 miles (I only use the car every couple of weeks). Dealer checked both batteries, no problem (I had a new auxiliary battery 3 years ago). My wife has a Suzuki Ignis which sits on the drive for days on end (mine's in a cosy garage) but the stop/start on the Suzuki works straightaway every time.

I also have the problem that if the car sits in the car park for more than a few days stop start is greyed out after a few miles it will start working again and if I do a long trip it seems to work for a couple of weeks the battery was checked during service and was passed ok I have to admit that it doesnt bother me that much as most of my journeys are in traffic and I tend to switch it off any way I spoke to a tech and he reckons Volvo could have done with fitting a higher amperage battery
Non-hybrid petrol and diesel XC40 has a different setup, featuring a 12V support battery for stop/start functionality. This support battery also powers the internet modem that connects the car to the Volvo app for up to five days after the engine is shut off, which makes it prone to discharge if the vehicle isn’t used at least once a week. It should not be confused with the 12V main battery, which can hold power for a prolonged period. To avoid depleting the support battery, it’s advisable to take the car for a drive whenever the “Vehicle is in standby” banner appears in the Volvo Cars app.
