If you can catch it in time with oiling then you should be able to put off replacement. Mine had the original plastic shrouded struts and I had no warning, fine one day and the next the tailgate wouldn't shut automatically as the springs had rusted and expanded causing resistance.

@Roy03 - how do you get the oil in the strut?

I used an old fashioned oil can and squirted a few drops on the ram where it goes into the bottom section and then shut the tailgate down, I done this for a few days and it still seems okay, keeping my fingers crossed!!

Thank you. I was going to ask if they can be opened and cleaned/oiled then I saw this.

Mine creaked to the point where the door no longer closed automatically. I bought a new original one through an advertisement at half the price and protected both with rubber gaskets for siphons in order to prevent water penetration. My T5 recharge 2021 is not covered by warranty, I bought it used a few months ago.

Made of elastic rubber. I lubricated the inner part with a little liquid dish detergent to make it easier to slide onto the strut. I unhooked the thicker part of the strut and put on the rubber part. I hope it will protect against further water penetration

Is there any gas in the electric operated struts ? Mine is groaning and I wondered if i could drill a small hole in bottom to let water out ! then seal it and drill another in the top to put some oil in and then reseal same!
