My clutch has just burnt out. on a 2020 XC40 less than 3 years old with 36K on the Clock. The dealership has advised that Volvo will not do this under warranty as it it down to 'Driving style'
I have been driving for over 25 years and have never had to change a clutch. I have had cars over with over 200,000 miles all on the original clutch so this is simply not true.
There must be a fault or the XC40 is not fit for purpose.
The dealership has quoted me over £2400 for a new clutch and flywheel.
So I am also stuck with a year left on lease and this rip of bill
I'm not sure where to take this.
Has anyone got any advise ?
Clutch burnout
That's a standard answer for any service department, warranty department Manufacturer Private warranty company,
Sorry sir consumable item!!!!!!!!
I would be contacting Volvo Head office as this seems to be a common fault especially with the 3 pot engine.
I had a timing chain break on an N47 engined MINI a few years ago, as a retired Motor Trade person I asked
to see the damage! * bent valves plus engine block damage 58,000 pls 1 year out of warranty,I went along
to main dealers in Leeds in my Classic mini armed with my camera, BMW/MINI repaired under warranty
and a new MINI hire car for 7 weeks , Known fault on that particular engine.
Don't be fobbed of stand your ground also report it to SMMT and consumer protection.

Hi - i'm just wondering if anyone has had any joy with volvo in getting a contribution to repairing these problems? Our xc40, 2020 T3 has a damaged crank shaft which has led to engine damage, and we have been told that we need to pay £11.400 for a new engine. The car has done 34000 miles, and is three months out of the 36 month warranty. We believe this must be a problem with the car rather than something we have caused. The car is leased, but not under warranty from the lease company. Any success stories would be welcomed!
This is very unfortunate. Since its introduction in XC40, the 3 cylinder engine had its share of problems, but it will be difficult to prove your case is a manufacturing fault that should be covered by Volvo outside warranty.
A similar case happened to me a decade ago with a VW equipped with new engine technology (1.2 TSI) and new gearbox technology (DSG7 “dry”), both failing shortly after 4 year warranty with only 15.000 miles on the odometer. At that time it was imposibile to get any contribution for the repair despite it was a know fault to VW.

Not really sure how the crank would get "damaged". Maybe bearings if there was lack of oil or if it were contaminated. Anyhow, I would want a better explanation of the failure and take it from there. Maybe an independent assessment?
Makes the 400 quid for a fourth year warranty seem cheap!

Yes, if you're going to put up any sort of fight you need to have the failure investigated by a suitably qualified engineer who has experience of dealing with manufacturers refusing claims.
It's always frustrating and depressing to read of manufacturers dismissing claims out of hand, especially after folks have had to pay for repairs and then it is later found out that many failures have been the result of poor design or materials and the manufacturers have to begrudgingly admit to it. The onus should be on the manufacturer to prove it wasn't due to a fault not the other way round, especially if the car is low mileage and has a full service history. And many forums for different manufacturers have stories of owners with problems being told by dealers and manufacturers that their problem was the first they'd heard of! It's disgraceful really.
The fact that most manufacturers still only offer a 3 year warranty says it all really. Failures in years four and five at least (if not the owners fault) show some cars are not fit for purpose and consumers still don't have sufficient protection in law unless they have deep pockets.

I have never worked on an XC40 (mine's auto) but this premature clutch burnout happens on several makes of car and the manufacturers always deny there is a fault. Like the post office. In my long experience of fitting clutches consistent cases of premature clutch wear is due to faults in the operation of the hydraulic system, very often due to poor design. Modern vehicle's clutch systems are weighted towards lightness of operation which means malfunction is not easily spotted. Mileages of 5000 are totally unacceptable as clutch life. I wouldn't pay main dealer prices, you can probably halve that by using a good independent. Genuine makers parts are available in the trade at a fraction of franchise dealer prices. I'm no longer working I'm afraid before you ask
After 16 weeks I am still in dispute with Volvo over their contention that a XC40 with 9000 miles on the clock has a burnt out clutch because a of driver abuse. `they are now laughingly telling me to take it up with the retailer who did the repair! The car is leased from Volvo Cars Financial Services . My wife and I have had many cars have driven for over 100 years between us and have never ever had a clutch problem. Volvo keep running away from the issue. Freedom of Information on XC40's is our next step as Volvo UK refers to provide an explanation of this improbable event.
