Notes for Update 2.2 indicate CarPlay has finally arrived. Has anybody tried it yet? I haven't been able to download the update yet.

That's exciting. Nothing showing on mine as yet but maybe in the next few days. Perhaps they could also sort the hopelessly inaccurate speed limit warnings too!

2.2 has been listed on the Volvo website since at least yesterday:

However, I suppose it is unclear exactly when it will be available for download. The US forum is indicating 3 July for OTA.

Everything I've read states its wired connection only....

Looks like 2.2 has been pulled (apparently because of a bug that changes m/h to km/h), so no CarPlay yet. But at least we know it is definitely coming.

As noted in the main forum 2.2 has arrived with CarPlay. So far so good.

Its installed and working as it should. Personally I find the inbuilt google automotive system extremely good. Having to plug in via a cable and losing the mapping in the instrument display mean i probably won't be using CarPlay.
