Does anybody know why there are 2 coolant tanks under the hood in the XC40 Plug-in hybrid?
Perhaps one for the engine the other for the cabin heating?

I though the HVCH (high voltage coolant heater) warms up the water primarily for cabin heating and secondary on the same hand for the motor. By the time the motor starts up it is a bit preconditioned in terms of temperature.
Correct?

If cabin heating and motor cooling are 2 different circles of flows, this cannot be the case.

From the manual:
"The hybrid battery's cooling system has a separate expansion tank."

Thank you, Rockford!
That makes sense.
So my thoughts on the motor coolant preconditioning might be valid.

My suspicion is that the HVCH works on the hybrid coolant system only, and this is what also feeds the cabin heater matrix.
That way, when the cabin is pre-heated, so is the battery.

What happens when only the petrol engine is running? Not sure.
Perhaps the alternator powers the HVCH (via the Li-ion cells)? That would seem to be a waste of all of the excess heat from the ICE.
Perhaps the heater matrix has two separate coolant pathways?

All guesswork on my part.
Next time I look under the bonnet I'll see if I can identify the HVCH and trace which expansion vessel it's connected to.
