Sat nav google maps update

Took my car for its service today at the local Volvo dealer. They updated the software to the latest version. I asked why the car didn’t upload the minor updates itself but got told the only update you can do yourself is the sat nav map update where you log into a lap top or pc, go into Volvo website and download the latest maps to a memory stick then insert the stick into the car and update the maps.

They said the only reason the dealer doesn’t do it is that the update could take a few hours.

Is this correct or does Google maps update without having to go through the download to a memory stick option?

Google maps, and other applications, such as Spotify, will (should) update without taking your car into a dealer. For example the addition of the ETA for Google Maps in the dash console screen - that updated automatically for me. You can check for updates to applications yourself, if there are any pending, and download them if they haven't already done so.

Note - I'm still on version 3.1.9 so it doesn't look like the update you received, to update AAOS, will be coming OTA to me.

It sounds like the procedure the dealer described was that used on cars using the Sensus system.

Sounds like BS to me as with Google Maps being an online service wouldn't it update itself?

For cars using AAOS then it’s auto map update, works brilliantly for me. Seems to update almost daily based on lane/road changes on major highway upgrades near me

Google Maps on AAOS works like an app on your smartphone. It updates the map and traffic in real time using the car’s internet connection. As already mentioned, the USB stick map update method is used for the Sensus OS cars.

Sensus cars also update maps over the air, on a regular basis. Only once in 4 years has an update been too big to download and the USB stick method was needed.
