Even if you turned the engine off with the infotainment display showing something else at the time? This is how mine used to operate before the software update and I would like to get it back working the same way if possible.

I read on another forum that Volvo have frozen the roll out process during the holiday period. Seemingly it restarts on the 7th Jan. I don't know how accurate this is.
It was downloaded as I have Auto on, I just didn't do the install.

I'll have to do a search for updates now (even though it's already downloaded) as I've had to do before.

No idea if the infotainment system start up is now related to your most used screen.
Google maps on start up works for me as that is always my immediate choice and is on screen all the time when driving.
That's interesting. Did it default to Google Maps upon starting before the last software update?
I don't think so, but honestly speaking I never pay much attention to such things. I can say for sure though that the last 2 times I started the car, Google maps came up, maybe because I have paired Google maps on my iPhone to the car and I noticed my last place I searched on my phone came up in the Google maps destination search in the car, even though I never sent a route to the car.

Mine starts with the four category displays as it did before the update.

I like the 4 categories default because it shows what my radio station is playing even if I have it on mute. If I see a song I like I'll un-mute it. I had grown to love that feature and now it has gone unless I press the button every time I've started the car up. It also looks more pleasing than the mobile phone-style apps homescreen.

Yes. Nothing has changed since the update apart from the lack of ETA in the driver display and android being an option. Maybe the EV is slightly different but I doubt it. Ours is MY22 rather than the latest which might be a factor.

How does one 'hard' reset the infotainment system? Apparently pressing and holding the button underneath is a soft reset.

Pressing and holding the button for 20 seconds is suggested online by Volvo
However, I think there may be a factory reset option in the settings, which means you would need to recreate your profile :

In the centre display, swipe down from the top to open the notification centre.
Press the profile icon in the top left of the display.
Select the owner profile (the first profile created).
Press the settings symbol iCup-2037-Settings symbol.
Navigate to System > Reset options > Factory reset.
The car is now reset to the factory values.

Wouldn't I just have to log-into Google, Volvo and Spotify again? Or is it more complex...
I would hate to do the nuclear option only to have it operate the same way it does currently. I'll wait and see if anyone else can confirm that their infotainment system defaults to the 4 horizontal categories upon starting the ignition no matter what screen they were on previously.

Sorry, can't really help here as it's not something I have needed to do myself. But I would think if you do a factory reset, you will not just need to sign in with your Google account, etc, but go to the various settings and adjust accordingly, same as when you collected the car.
Other than that, I suggest a quick drive to the Volvo dealer and get them to run you through it on the spot.
