Yes, speed limit display and speed limiting will only be accurate and safe when first rate map data is utilized rather than using a camera based system reading signs that can be fooled/malfunction for a number of reasons.

Even if Google Maps was 100% accurate the car doesn't use its map data for the speed limit display etc.

The manual says that in some markets the camera is combined with map data....so we may or may not use this in the UK....

That's my understanding too.
Thanks

I thought that but sometimes when there are no signs my speed limit display disappears and only reappears when a sign is encountered so I came to the conclusion that it's not using map data even as a backup - that's on a busy A road so not like it's in the back of beyond . My conclusion might be wrong though.

Edit: Had a bit of a Google and it does say that map data is used if the car has it. Does this mean if the car has its own sat nav system though like the previous Sensus rather than Google? It appears that Google speed limits are only shown if you are using a phone.

From my understanding if you get the current speed limit shown and behind it you get the next speed limit then this has come from the map data. If there’s no map data nor sign to read then no speed limit is shown (or Google will make a guess  )

That makes sense. I did wonder if the camera was reading the sign for the upcoming speed limit but I think your understanding is right after my journey home.

I left a 30 limit which was correctly shown, and turned into a 60 limit and despite not passing a sign it then correctly displayed 60, so it must be using map data. Bit slow though as it took about 75 yards to display. It didn't show current speed limit and upcoming one though. That seems to happen only when there are signs so still a bit confusing. Perhaps because of the delay in changing to 60 indicates that there was no map data for that short stretch of road. 30 limit was flashing as I was accelerating up to 60 so again shows that the system isn't good enough for automatically controlling a cars speed.

I always use Waze on the centre display showing speed limits from Google maps data and map editors. Often these speed limits are in contradiction with those shown by Sensus map data and car camera in the driver display. Sometimes I see 3 different speed limits, the real one on the road sign, a different one on my centre display and a different one in my driver display

It’s a matter of software to display the correct speed limit with camera reading overriding map data. Second gen XC40 has a new camera unit expected to perform better than the old one, but its software has to improve.

Yesterday I saw a 60 mph predicted but it was obvious that new signs had been installed at 50mph and as soon as the car passed the new sign it immediately updated to 50 so that works but the sign was new and clean. Some of the other signs even I have trouble reading as they are so faded, dirty, or covered by vegetation.

Sdrennan, I'm interested to know what your centre screen shows under Settings for Speed Limiter. On my MY24 model it has a toggle switch to choose manual or automatic Speed Limiter as per photo.

If anyone has an MY25 model year car I'd be interested to know how the Speed Limiter options have changed from the screen shown in my previous post.
