All attempts by me to lubricate struts had failed so spoke with local dealer about replacements. They said it was a known issue and agreed to see what Volvo could do.

MY20 T4 Inscription Pro (out of warranty) - just had tailgate struts replaced at no cost by local dealer. Very pleased as indicated cost was in the £900 region.

I have this same issue on my right tailgate strut. My car has the electronic tailgate.

Volvo wanting £160 diagnosis fee and no indication of a gesture of goodwill.

I have found replacement strut online but my question is will my car recognise the new strut if I replace myself? I know the onboard computer does have software updates and I didn't know if a new strut would work after a straight forward replacement.

Did you just ask at your local Volvo dealer?

Nevermind goodwill! It was a flawed design and there should be no question of them replacing them. But "goodwill" is the route to go down.

How much did you end up paying with the ‘goodwill’ discount?

My tailgate struts are now starting to creak and groan ( like me in the morning ). Phoned my local dealer and they quoted £138.00 to diagnose the problem, which I said was a waste of money. They did say that there had been a few cars with this problem, so I said is there any offer of goodwill on the cost of replacement , and they said they would get back to me, so watch this space!

These "diagnostics" are a right con. Fair enough when the problem isn't obvious and needs investigating but for struts it's a right try on and the first thing they say and puts your back up from the off.

Was it the car or your creak and groans they were looking to diagnose? Either way…a rip off!

The local Volvo dealer contacted me about a goodwill gesture. Volvo will not consider a goodwill gesture unless I have a diagnostic check done by the dealer, I said you don't need to plug a laptop in to hear a strut squeaking, and also they quoted £980.40p to replace the struts if no goodwill is offered. I said that was very expensive for two rams that are not fit for purpose. I am now considering buying third party rams with a 3year warranty for £294. What do you think?
