Hi, in earlier posts I created a shroud for my 2019 struts which I expected to keep the water out. However I have recently heard the N/S strut creaking. I have been trying the engine oil lubrication which I expect will help matters but I also found that water runs out of the top of the bottom cover of the strut. I therefore have cut small holes in the bottom rubber cover to release the water as per photo below. I poked a hole with a small screwdriver and then enlarged it with a small pair of electrical snippers. It strikes me that cutting a drain hole at the bottom of the struts can only help matters. The bottom cover can only be a to stop dust/dirt ingress. Water will drain out of the hole but there will also be a very small amount of ventilation which should avoid the springs being in a constant high humidity atmosphere. Without the hole the water builds up to at least the heights of the top of the cover meaning that there is a pool of water in the bottom of the strut. If I do have to get new struts I will definitely cut drain holes in the bottom covers. My car is now 5.5 years old but is mostly garaged.

You'd think that designers could get something relatively simple like a strut right! Especially the modified ones! :)

I replaced my left-hand one today as it was getting louder and louder, the creaking and groaning. It also jammed open last Thursday and had to be manually closed. Just couldn't trust it anymore. I got a new strut from:

https://carlightbulb.com/search?q=xc40+ ... s=e&_v=1.0

and after watching this video:

did it in about 30 minutes, slow and steady.

I did contact Volvo directly (who said that i had to go through the dealers) and 2 Volvo dealers but they wanted to do a £££ diagnostic.

Its design fault and it should be a re-call.
