Volvo will not consider a goodwill gesture unless I have a diagnostic check done by the dealer, I said you don't need to plug a laptop in to hear a strut squeaking, and also they quoted £980.40p to replace the struts if no goodwill is offered. I said that was very expensive for two rams that are not fit for purpose. I am now considering buying third party rams with a 3year warranty for £294. What do you think?
How much was the “goodwill gesture” going to be? If it’s a high percentage I’d get the sham diagnostic done and get Volvo struts

I agree with ChrisJohn, the "goodwill gesture" is likely to be significant if offered.

That is the problem, the dealer said they would not consider a goodwill gesture until ( no mention of percentages ) until the full diagnostics had been done. If a percentage had been mentioned I could then make a decision, but I could be £138.00 out of pocket and no discount offered. If they said 50% discount would be offered it would be a no brainer, but they might say as its out of warranty it's going to be the full price, which then comes to over £1100 with the diagnostic charge!

It’s not Snows in Southampton is it?
I fear I’ll be having exactly the same conversation with them very soon 🤦🏻‍♂️

No. It’s Hylton gott in Downham market. Reading on the forum it seems that all Volvo dealers leave a lot to be desired

Absolutely ridiculous and a total rip off! So what does the diagnostic check involve, open and closing the tailgate, hearing a creak, and then charging you £138 for the privilege. Is there an independent specialist in the area you could go to?

There could be an issue with the electrics causing reduced or no current to one Strut, so i guess the issue would be if they merely replaced the struts and it didn't cure the problem would you be happy? I appreciate this is unlikely, but they have a process to follow especially when looking for money from Volvo.

The struts are working okay, but the drivers side one is very noisy. There seems to be a shortage of independent Volvo garages round here, but work in progress as they say

Will an independent be able to access the "goodwill" from Volvo?

The trouble is you're not guaranteed any " goodwill" from Volvo. If they said you will get X amount if they are faulty, you have a decision to make because you have the figures to work with. I also think there is a bit of dealer discretion, but they won't say. Also I didn't buy the car from them, so they didn't get the profit from the sale
