For those interested, registration of new cars under the agency model, is dealt with by Volvo and no longer by the dealer.

I was on the verge of asking Volvo if I could choose from a limited number of registrations, as I've done with many cars over the years, as I like to avoid odd looking combinations.

I thought it unlikely though and this was confirmed having received the last of the financial agreement for signing which has the registration on it. I assume this means the car is now in the country?

Fortunately the registration is Ok but it is something else that has been taken away from customer service and choice.

There's going to be a lot of cars registered in one part of the country! Are they going to run out of combinations?

26 x 26 x 26 and London looks to have 20 prefixes for the first two letters so that’s 350,000 or so for six months cad registrations. Granted some letter combinations are excluded.

I was in the same boat I was hoping to be able to have small selection but I’m okay with my reg. it’s growing on me. :-)

i will be transfering my private plate and you are right...dealer has told me i have to sort with Volvo directly where as in the past i have just emailed the code through to the dealer when putting my plate on retention and the dealer then sorted the rest so the car arrived with my plate already on. Hoping this works ok otherwise ill be making far too many calls to insurance each time i make a change.

You already see this with Polestar (where they have OV or OY) however one would argue that if it bothers you that much, you can go to DVLA and for as little as £250 pick a plate that works for you

I've got private plates on my other car and a motorbike, just wasn't that fussed about having one on the Volvo. Fortunately I don't need to.

Having a design background doesn't help! I tend to notice things that many don't or aren't that bothered about. As they say, it's all in the detail!

Hmm I am checking out the dvla web site. If I’m picking the car up this week would I order the plate and then swap it over ?

Yes Vlomo… you are correct… if you’re picking the car up this week I doubt you’ll have time to arrange it to be registered eith s new plate as my dealer said Volvo are asking people to retain their plates at least 2 weeks before delivery.,, but if you are buying a plate from the DVLA website the price you pay.., which most people pick one up for around £250 includes the fee to assign the plate to your new car.

When reading through the finance paperwork I saw a charge from Volvo of I think £40 for dealing with private plates.

Doesn't affect me but I didn't know anything this beforehand and before I saw my registration in the paperwork. If I had a private plate I'm guessing this would need another logbook being issued?

I think Volvo still have a way to go. I expected to be notified that the car had been built before it got to that stage, which I wasn't, at which point I could have been asked if I had a private plate, that should be part of their process.

If you already had a car then you would have to buy and swop the plates yourself. The DVLA gives you authorization to get the plates made up from a boni-fide supplier.

But hopefully the dealer will supply and fit the plates for you. You will then receive a new logbook from the DVLA after a week or so.

I, too, received the final finance paperwork a couple of days ago and the car reg on it is a Reading plate - which is where my Volvo dealer is located. Might be a coincidence, though.
Cheers,
Ron
