Put the deposit down on a XC40 2.0 B5 MHEV Inscription Auto AWD Euro 6 and will be collecting on Friday.

Look forward to sharing photos.

Just out of curiosity has anyone had their Volvo garage apply the Ceramic Supagard paint work protection?

I chose not to have the dealership apply Supagard, but got a local specialist to ceramic coat the paint and wheels for me instead. I can’t comment on whether the dealership would take the time and care to apply it properly, but I was confident that the car detailer I used would do a professional job.

I’d recommend reading up on it before deciding. It does leave a lovely deep shine on the paintwork, but it doesn’t stop the car getting dirty, or scratched. It just means you don’t have to wax the car every few months. Also be aware that you’ll need to wash the car with a more expensive ph neutral car shampoo. I’ve been told that “wash and wax” type products will strip the ceramic coating.

One advantage of these coatings is that bird lime is easy to remove. However, I don’t think I’ll bother having the coating reapplied when it needs it. I quite enjoy waxing and detailing my cars.

Yes I did have it done by the dealer before I collected and I'm still happy with the results, car remains easy to wash and just wipe over (if you want to) after rinsing, the pH neutral shampoo can be had from several suppliers at the same price and quantity as other products-no need to stick with supagard products even though they are very good. Every 6-8months I apply Autoglym super resin polish and then extra gloss protection (other products are available)just to keep it "topped up". Glad I had it done and I dare say a local detailer would do just as good or better job.

The world of detailing is a minefield as the more you read the less satisfied that you are with your particular regime, although I find that those who seem to criticise the ceramic / paint protection products are the types that will never be happy and cannot keep their hands off their cars chasing the elusive perfect apprearence.

I found this website useful for a number of things , explains clearly some of the myths. https://cars.newagain.co.uk/

Ours had Autoglym Lifeshine applied by the dealer. I was a bit sceptical and had planned to get a detailer to do it. However the price from the dealer was good and I have to say the results are excellent. Its really easy to keep clean and has produced a much better finish than untreated Volvo paint. Another of our cars was treated with Supagard some 15 years ago when it was new. It did not need polishing again until 10 years old. Autoglym super resin and extra gloss protection then brought it up like new again. It does lead a very cosseted existence which probably helps.

10 years is impressive. However, very few would keep a vehicle that long. The ceramic coating I had done has a life expectancy of 2 years. Products were available that would last much longer, but at a much higher price.

It is easier to clean with the coating, but it’s not just throwing a bucket of water over it. I still give it a weekly multistage wash, consisting of a gentle hose down, then a pre-wash snow foam, followed by a “two bucket” hand wash using Autoglym shampoo and lambs wool mitt, a good rinse, then towel dry.

I rate Autoglym products very highly. I didn’t know they did a “lifetime shine” product, or I would have looked into having that done instead. I’ll keep it in mind for next time.

Quite a few people I know never wash their cars and think I’m mad to go to such lengths. They also think I’m mad to spend so much money on a car in the first place. Each to their own.

We look after our cars and keep them a long time. The XC40 replaced a 27 year old Mercedes 124 estate. We also have a 2003 CLK and 2005 SLK. All owned from new. We dont change them very often.
