Range at 80% charge in cold weather
I have just taken possession of an XC40Pro Recharge Twin, and am concerned at the apparent short range available. I charge at home on off-peak rates, usually to 80%, which seems to give a predicted range of about 170 miles. The car is 3 years old, and I am starting to worry if the previous owner abused the battery. I expect a reduced range in temperatures close to freezing, but I thought the figure would still have been higher. The predicted range does seem to fairly accurately reflect what I can achieve in normal day-to-day driving. Any guidance from experienced users would be greatly appreciated.
The WLTP for your electric motor is 258 at 100% charge, which will be optimistic. In cold weather you should expect a reduction of 20%, which gives you a range of just over 200 miles, which means your predicted range of 170 miles at 80% charge looks about right. Range prediction is also based on recent history of driving patterns, and will adjust accordingly when it gets use to your specific patterns, such as motorway/local driving mix, heavy or light foot on acceleration etc.

Sounds about right. Ours is showing 180 miles at 80% charge in the cold weather today. In summer it will show another 20 -30 miles. It drops quite quickly when you first start if using the heater but comes back up again pretty promptly once it warms up. It is pretty accurate I find. Usually I arrive with 1-3% more than it’s initial prediction.

80% charge showing around 170 miles is pretty standard in our 2.5 year experience of a XC40 single and XC40 twin motor. If it’s not already on, switching on the range optimiser might give you an extra 10-15 miles. The good news is that the estimate is usually pretty accurate and as reported above maybe underestimating slightly if anything.

About right.
Range extender doesn’t do an awful lot in colder , wet, dark journeys. I’ve had to increase the climate fan speed on occasions to keep the windows clear with RA on, cancelling out any real benefit.
Do the usual checks for tyre pressures too, ambient temps are 10 or more degrees colder now than early November

I think the range you're getting sounds pretty typical, especially with the car being a few years old and the colder temps affecting things. I’ve got an electric car too, and I've noticed the range can vary quite a bit depending on the weather and how much charge you put in. The 80% charge limit is a smart move for the long term, but it’s not unusual to see that kind of dip as the battery ages. If it’s still driving well and matching what the app says, it might not be anything to worry about. If you're still feeling unsure, maybe have a dealer check the battery health just to be safe.
