Another Failed Auxiliary Drive Belt-B4 Mild Hybrid
Is this problem affecting the latest builds to leave the factory? I'm due to take delivery of a new B4 this coming Tuesday and am wondering if my car might suffer from this belt tensioner issue.

This does seem to have gone quiet, so maybe the newest cars are OK and it was just a batch issue?

Driving my 2024 xc40 at 2.00 am on the M25 when I heard a whirring sound followed shortly by a loss of power and warnings saying battery fault and stop as soon as safe. Pulled off the motorway into a garage at J18 and the car died. Recovery truck guy looked under the bonnet and said the alternator belt has broken. Dragged the car onto the tow truck as wheels wouldn’t roll. Car is now with the dealer. Five months old and 4,000 miles on the clock.

Hmm, my car had just over 3000 miles on the clock when mine failed,
You can get the car into neutral and handbrake off as long as the battery is ok. Volvo Assistance man showed me how to do this.
Hope you get fixed ok, let us know how you get on.

]I have to report the same experience with a failed tensioner belt pulley.
Took delivery of an XC40 B4 mild hybrid at the beginning of May 2024. Was in the south of France when the tensioner belt pulley seized, all with the same as others, warning light stating pull over etcetera.....The cars mileage was 3,5000 miles!!!
Called Volvo assistance at the side of the road and waited 26 minutes for an answer. They sent a recovery truck but had trouble loading it on as he couldn't disengage the electronic brake!! The lady from Volvo assistance was very helpful but their counterparts in France, who are Allianz insurance were not...../...Too long a story to go into all the detail but it was a pretty horrendous experience.
My main gripe is that Volvo must be aware of this problem as the main dealer in France told me that my car was the fifth car that week with the same problem....Unbelievable!!!
I can only assume as Volvo have insurance to cover the breakdowns they don't want to recall for the fear of negativity. The dealer also informed me that there are other parts that will also need to be replaced. I have telephoned Volvo but all they could say is that they may be aware of the problem via the dealers........
You cannot monitor this problem as the pulleys suddenly seize.
This seems to be symptomatic of the way things are done now....Loads of money spent on advertising and when there's a problem, keep it quiet. A real shame as this is a nice car to drive!!!!!

Could you explain the process as it would useful to know in case a none Volvo breakdown turns up which is quite common to meet Volvo's promise of 90 minute attendance..poleposition wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 9:33 pm You can get the car into neutral and handbrake off as long as the battery is ok. I think it disgraceful that Volvo are not taking action so that their customers aren't subject to the hassle and stress of this breakdown as it seems to be becoming more than uncommon. They must know if it was just a batch of faulty components or whether the basic design is at fault. Rather than negative pre-emptive action would be seen as positive by potential buyers.
Given that all the replacements would have been carried out under warranty they should only know too well about the issue.

You need to put the car into ignition mode II (2)...gedger wrote: ↑Wed Oct 23, 2024 5:33 pmCould you explain the process as it would useful to know in case a none Volvo breakdown turns up which is quite common to meet Volvo's promise of 90 minute attendance..poleposition wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 9:33 pm You can get the car into neutral and handbrake off as long as the battery is ok. Do not press the footbrake. Press and hold the start button for about 5 seconds until the dash comes to life. You are now in ignition mode II.
You can now turn off the handbrake and select neutral. You may need your foot on the brake pedal to do this but a message on the screen will prompt you.

Thanks for that, useful to know if the dreaded or similar happens. No way am I letting some knumbscull drag my car! Well, unless in a dangerous position and no choice!
