I was into an Independent Tyre retailer just now and asked about how much material was left on my brake pads. They had a look and said I had 5k miles left but no need to worry as it will show a warning on the dashboard when its time for replacement.
Cant remember ever seeing that referenced anywhere.
Is there one?
Brake Pad wear
Most cars have a warning. Even the 27 year old car I have just sold had one. its a circle with an exclamation mark inside it. Comes up either red or amber with an associated message defining the nature of the problem.

At my first service (17,000 miles) I had only lost about 2mm off the pads and less than half wear on the tyres... So that puts the pads at about 4 years and the tyres 2 and a bit - equates to about 68k, and 34k... Happy with that
Umm isn’t that a generic brake failure rather than a pad wear warning?
Although I agree with that if you receive a supplemental message saying pads are worn.
Time to RTFM I think.
Must say I am really surprised at that. Most brake pads come with a wear sensor in the box. Seems very poor to not have a warning. In my old car the warning came on amber the day before we were due to drive to Italy. Took it to the local specialist who had a look. He said as expected the warning comes on with about 10% left on the pads so had them changed after getting to Italy. Have to say it was a pig of a job to do for the poor mechanic. I think my Twin motor has a 20,000 mile or two year service interval. Thats a very long time with no way of monitoring the pad wear.

That’s interesting, sure I was told it did have the wear sensors - it’s due a service in a couple of months, so I’ll ask again…
