I've had my B4awd since September but only done 2211 miles. According to the app have averaged 36.6 mpg. Mix of long and short journeys, in comfort mode and E10 petrol. I am a very gentle driver and cruise at 60-70 mph. I came from a D3R and am delighted with my economy.

36 at the beginning of bedding in a 190bhp petrol AWD auto engine is great, perhaps the mild hybrid is helping a touch.

The B3 engine is an unknown, same bhp as the 1.5 but from a 2.0 block, so may not feel as strained. Has anyone got a new B3P yet?

Btw am I mad to get the new Fjord blue without seeing one in the flesh?

Plenty of videos on YouTube showing the colour. If I was looking to buy an xc40 now, I would go for exactly what you want as a B3. Only downside is the lack of a black roof but what do I know? I ordered an R-Design in black so the roof colour is irrelevant.

Yeah gutted about them pulling R Design but they clearly see it as an upsell to the eleccy models. All the car makers have strict internal and governmental targets for eleccy cars now.

Buy an AWD with the biggest most powerful petrol engine available whilst you still can. You won't be disappointed with the vehicle, worst case scenario is you may get a few less mpg. Small price to pay.
Anyway, in my experience bigger lazy engines don't have to work so hard to deliver and therefore can be as economical.
I had a twin turbo 3 litre straight six BMW in 2009 and on a gentle run it would return 37mpg. But then again it wasn't lugging around electric motors and batteries everywhere it went.

Yep you make a good point, it’s the end of an era, I shall be driving an ICE engine as long as I can, certainly past 2030. They’ve never been as clean as they are now (even diesel) or as efficient (per ton pulled).

Driving for me (even though I only do 6-7000 miles a year) is about convenience and a petrol station anywhere and a 5 min fill and go will always suit me best. Time may come that electric infrastructure and charge times match but it’s a decade or two away.

We’ll need a lot of nuclear power stations to cope with a car park full of electric vehicles and that’s going to take a long time and money (that we don’t have) and the political nouse to get on with it. Even by 2035 there will still be 34m ICE cars in the UK “parc” and an estimated 14-15m max full and part electric cars but that will need a massive infrastructure change on top of the power issue. We’ll need a government capable of handling all this…(I’m apolitical btw ;))

Somewhat of a sidetrack but it’s an interesting conversation

So what do we think of this?
As close as I can get to the look of an R Edition, dark spec, same wheels and privacy glass. The Fjord blue is a risk because it’s hard to see exactly if the larger than c40 roof and rear will suit the XC40 without the black roof option, but seeing as I only wash a car 2-3 times a year probably a better bet than black. Although black is the only way to match how an R Edition would have looked!

I'm with you. Regardless I like petrol engines and distrust what I'm told by scientists and governments.
Does anyone recall we were told in the 70s that Oil reserves would run out in 30 year's time? The message wasn't right then, is the message right now about BEVs?
Somehow I doubt it.

I read that hydrogen (both ICEngine and Fuel Cell) are still being developed along with Ammonia ICEngines. BEV vehicles could possibly maybe become the steam cars of the 21st century.

I do think Electric will be the answer for cars, perhaps H will be the future choice of commercial vehicles though. However I expect by mid 2030s we will see cars have a “real world” 400-500 mile range. I’ve never been an early adopter, rather wait til they’ve ironed out the issues and reached better performance in most new technologies.
