Indeed, the “B” mild hybrid drivetrain was initially developed for the Aisin TC8 gearbox found on all Volvo models. The DC7 gearbox was introduced later to the XC40 and either Volvo didn’t test the new system throughly, or decided that occasional noise wasn’t disturbing enough to generate complaints.

I have to say I've heard mine make the noise occasionally early on, but now hardly ever. Either way it really doesn't bother me. Just a feature. Bit like the wooshing instead of a big engine burble under hard acceleration.

I have had the sound in the last sound clip in “John1989” post since day 1 but it is very intermittent and I can’t replicate it at will. I looked online and it seems it is to do with regenerative braking and nothing to be concerned with. Certainly won’t be taking it back to the main dealer to get the runaround and hoping a software fix sorts it in the near future 🤞

Has anyone got a genuine straight tale from Volvo regarding this random noise under braking seemingly linked to the regen braking system and the 7 speed DCT gearbox? Mine is a Sept 2022 model and I noticed this noise within a few weeks of purchase and at first disregarded it as road noise but since then I have come to recognise it as something odd.

When I first took it back to the dealership they could find nothing immediately wrong with the braking system but the noise persisted and whilst trying to figure it out I came across this forum site. I have since been going around in circles for quite some time with Volvo UK but to be fair my local dealership have tried to be helpful. They did lend me a 2023 courtesy car for a weekend in which I covered some distance and yep same random noise but maybe not as loud. From the forum there does seem to be others affected by this issue, which in my case is really random and I cant figure out what factors come together to prompt it and therefore can't replicate it at will.

Volvo UK though tell me there are no known issues with this model despite me pointing them to this forum site and telling them that my dealership know these models make this noise. I have been asked to take the car in again which apparently will open the door to the dealership being able to talk to Volvo's technical team.

My primary concern is potential issues down the line with resale which is why I was intrigued by a suggestion on the forum that Volvo are actively looking for a fix. The posted 'Volvo' response from John1989 does seem plausible but when I ask Volvo they say they have no record of it. I regret that from my experience so far I am far from sure that Volvo are trying to resolve this.

What I would like to determine is whether this issue does affect 'all' of the latest gen XC40's or just some. If not 'all' are affected then something IS wrong with those like mine that are affected. If 'all' are affected then frankly it is a poor design issue that Volvo really need to address.

Not impressed!

Unfortunately, John1989, who could potentially have provided an update on his situation, has only ever made that one post.

It's a tricky one. One poster has said he's never experienced it. Others say it varies in volume. The noise shouldn't be there and it still startles me slightly when it happens as I'm not expecting it.

Be interesting to hear what the Volvo technical team say. As tends to be the case with all manufacturers it seems that they are trying to sweep it under the carpet and won't admit there is an issue until it becomes higher profile.

The dealers must know about it but on handover nothing was said about a possible noise and as I said if I hadn't have known about it via this forum I would have been onto the dealer pronto the first time it happened as it sounded serious.

Ironic that in that letter they talk of a fix not being available until the necessary testing has been carried out!

As I posted earlier in this thread I raised this issue with Volvo directly some time ago.

This is a part extract of their response from June:

"Our technical team are confident that the noise experienced is a functional characteristic of the gearbox in your Volvo XC40 and not a fault. This been raised with our factory and as part of Volvo’s on-going software enhancements, we should have a software update to improve this functionality. However, please note that this is not a manufacturing or mechanical defect with your Volvo."

So if Volvo are telling you they are not aware of this issue then they are telling porkies.

Not hugely helpful I am afraid.

Not a manufacturing or mechanical defect - no, it's a design defect!

I've had the same squealing noise issue in freewheel mode and that parking brake message. Dealer's looking into it, but no fix yet. Hoping for a solution soon!
